Australia vs Sri Lanka 20th Match Preview: ICC World Cup 2019 | Key Players, Squads, Pitch Report

Australia Won by 87 runs

Man of the Match : Aaron Finch

Welcome to Cricwild. With 3 wins from four matches, Australia increasingly look like strong contenders for a spot in the final four, but these are still early days and they will want to keep the foot on the pedal when they take on Sri Lanka at the Oval to build on that early advantage. With David Warner batting with characteristic fluency for his century in the match against Pakistan, Australia’s top-order suddenly looks markedly more formidable, while the middle-order has been in good form to begin with.

Sri Lanka has been one of the unlucky sides in the 2019 World Cup as 2 out of their four matches were abandoned due to rain. Though Dimuth Karunartne and Co are languishing at the fifth spot on the points table with four points, their Net Run Rate of -1.517 isn’t in the greatest of shapes by any means.

Australia :

With 3 wins from four matches, Australia increasingly look like strong contenders for a spot in the final four, but these are still early days and they will want to keep the foot on the pedal when they take on Sri Lanka at the Oval to build on that early advantage.

After their defeat against India, Australia looked confident against Pakistan. The opening duo of Aaron Finch and David Warner provided the team with a very strong start which ended Australia’s innings at 307 runs. The Pakistani bowling attack wasn’t forgiving either, restricting their innings to only 49 overs, courtesy of Mohammad Aamir’s beautiful spell.

Steven Smith who scored a century in the warm-up match against England has rocked 231 runs against his name from 7 innings against SL with his best score being 72.

The Aussies may want to test out Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, who didn’t get to bowl versus the Brits. Even Glenn Maxwell will wish to get a hit in the middle. David Warner hasn’t quite looked at his brutal best, though he got 43 runs.

Sri Lanka :

Sri Lanka has been one of the unlucky sides in the 2019 World Cup as 2 out of their four matches were abandoned due to rain. Though Dimuth Karunartne and Co are languishing at the fifth spot on the points table with four points, their Net Run Rate of -1.517 isn’t in the greatest of shapes by any means.

The Lankans may bring fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep in the eleven. Prior to the game versus Bangladesh, he developed a cut and dislocation on his finger from the bowling arm and was ruled out of the game. But before the next match, he has returned to the nets and also bowled for around 25 minutes. A call on his availability for the game will be taken on Friday.

Sri Lankan skipper Angelo Mathews averages only 29.58 against Sri Lanka as he has got 503 runs from 19 innings against the Aussies. His last three ODI scores against this opponent are 57, 2 and 40.with 2 half-centuries from 5 innings against Australia, Kusal Mendis has accumulated 174 runs against this opponent at a worthy average of 34.79.

Lasith Malinga will also want some game-time. The likes of Kusal Perera, Nuwan Pradeep and Jeffrey Vandersay didn’t have a great outing last time and they will be keen to make amends.
